[I took a long time writing this article due to the hardness i found of the rules. After several days and weeks questionning my Fiqh professor to make it easier to understand and make it clearer to my mind , I finally was able to understand it better and i found it nonsense to write an article i couldn't myself understand. I tried my best as it is an important topic about daily Muslims's life , I hope it will be comprehensible for all ! ] Islam , the religion of perfection and easiness teach us how to perform wudhuu in all ease during winter or difficulty when something cover the organs which is hard to remove and maybe needed as a means of protection for the feet ( such as khuffs , socks , shoes..) or for the head ( turban , hijab ) or also to protect the wounds like splints , bandage and the like. We will see in this article the conditions , way and duration of wiping over the khuffs. In some cases , it is permissible to just wipe over them instead of removing them and washing what is underneath. As for the permissibility to use this concession , it is stated in many sahih hadiths that the Prophet ( peace be upon him) used to do so during journeys or when he was at home. As a proof of that , Al Hasan said : " I was told by seventy of the Companions that the Prophet ( peace be upon him) used to wipe over his khuffs with his wet hands during ablution" Wiping over the Khuffs during ablution The act of wiping over the khuffs and observing it is regarded as being better than taking off the khuffs and washing the feet because it is a sign of making use of the legal permission made by Allah, following the Sunnah of the Prophet and contradictiing the religious innovations ( bid'ah). If our beloved Prophet ( peace be upon him) was wearing 2 khuffs , he used to wipe over them both , but if not , he used to wash his feet. Therefore , what is impermissible is to put khuffs or socks just before performing wudhu in order to be able to wipe over them. The Duration of the validity of wiping over the khuffs without Taking them Off For a resident , it is permissible to keep wearing khuffs and wipe over them for a period of one day and night. As for the traveler ( when the destination is far enough and the person is permitted to shorten the prayers) , his period of permissibility is 3 days and nights. It is to be memorized and emphasized that the period of permissibility ( wiping over the khuffs) starts from being in state of ritual impurity ( caused by urine , stool or wind) after wearing the khuffs , as it is known that ritual impurity necessitates ablution for prayer. [ Some scholars view that the duration begins from the first ablution after being in a state of ritual impurity] Conditions of wiping ove the khuffs , socks and the like 1. To be in state of ritual purity ( state of ablution) upon wearing them. To shorten , they are to be put after ablution. If one is being in state of impurity when putting them on , it become impermissible for one to wipe over them. 2. The khuffs must be lawfully acquired , gotten and made. If they are made of silk ( for men ) , it also become impermissible to wipe over them. 3. They must completely cover the feet up to the ankles. One cannot use the concession if they are not thick enough and covering the parts of the feet which must be washed. It is to be noted that the Prophet ( peace be upon him) wiped over his socks and his shoes while performing ablution. It is thus deemed permissible to wipe over any foot coverings , such as socks made of wool and suchlike materials. The permissibility , regarding to wipe over the turban has two conditions : Firstly, the turban must be covering the area of the head which is totally covered. Secondly , the turban must be wrapped round the lower jaw up to the head, one or more than one turn or to be with a back tail. It is worth noting that it is permissible to wipe over khuffs and turban only in case of purification from the state of minor ritual impurity but not major ( janabah...) , in the latter case , one has to take off the khuffs and turban and wash underneath. As for splints , bandages , it is fine to wipe over them during wudhu without removing them provided they cover ONLY the injured part or the necessary parts which need to be covered for treatment. However , if the splints covers more than the injured part unecessarily , they must be removed and pass water under these parts. In contrary of khuffs and turban , the splints can be wiped over even during in state of minor and major ritual impurity and there is NO FIXED PERIOD to wipe over them ( until the wipe heals.) The areas to be wiped over is to be applied to the upper part of the khuffs ( or socks) and for the turban , most of it should be wiped over , especially its folds. As mentionned earlier , bandages must be wholly wiped over . Most importantly , how is it performed? The way it is perfomed is to be passing one's wet finger from one's toe to one's leg. Right leg with right hand and left hand with left leg. Also one should not repeat wiping. Let's do our best to use the legal law of Allah and the Sunnah of the Prophet and be at our turn teaching to others :)
