Not only we as Muslim are required to be pure from minor and major ritual impurities to perform prayer but we are also commanded to purify our body , clothes and remove any spot of impurity means , removal of impurity that afflict pure objects such as clothes , ustensils , sheets , floors and surroundings of prayer place. For instance , the Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded a woman to wash her mentrual blood from her garment. The basic means used for the removal of impurity is , of course , water , as it is the original means of purification. Allah said : " ..... and sent down upon you from the sky , rain by which to purify you.." {al Anfal : 11} The kinds of impure objects that must be removed As said earlier , impurity may be linked to the ground , floor or what is connected to them , such as walls, water basins, rocks... . In such cases , it is sufficient to wash it only once meaning , pouring water once until it cover the impure object. The Prophet ( peace be upon him) ordered to pour a bucket of water over the urine of a bedouin who urinated in the mosque. On the other hand , impurity may not be related to the ground or the floor , for example , the impurity caused by dogs , swine .... In such case , the impurity must be washed 7 times , one of them with earth because the Prophet peace be upon him said : " when a dog licks a ustensil belonging to anyone of you , let him wash it seven times , the first of them with earth." ( related by Muslim) However , it is not restricted to ustensil but also to clothes , sheets and the like. If the impurity isn't related to swine or dogs but urine , stool , blood , it must be washed , rubbed and wrung out until it is completely removed , leaving nor sign and color. Washed things can be divided in 3 categories: 1. Squeezable things such as clothes , so they must be wrung out after washing. 2. Unsqueezable things such as leather so they have to be overturned during washing. 3. Things that can neither be wrung out nor overturned , such things have to be washed, scrubbed and then pressed with a heavy object until most of their water dries . (we have washing machine for that nowdays) When a filthy area on one's body , clothes , a small place of prayer , cannot be located then the whole suspected area has to be washed until it is certain that the impurity has been removed. If the impure area cannot be identified , the whole object have to be washed. For a pure material soiled by an infant's urine , it is sufficient to purify it with sprinkling water , not washing it. However , if the child is old enough to eat ordinary food , the ruling on his/her urine is regarded as that of grown-ups , so , the urine has to be removed by washing . Narrated by Umm Qais bint Mihsan that she brought a small son of hers who has not started eating food to the Messenger of Allah (saw). The Messenger of Allah (saw) took him in his lap and he urinated on his garment, so he called for some water and sprinkled on it, but he did not wash it. (Sahih) Three kinds of impure objects : 1. Major impure object : caused by dogs or swine. 2. Minor impure object : urine of infants (who have not yet started eating ordinary food) 3. Moderate impure object : all other impurity. It is to be noted that there must be a disctinction between pure and impure urine and manure of animals. The legally edible animals , such as camels , cows , sheep are pure as it is stated that the Prophet ( peace be upon him) gave permission to the people of 'Uraynah to take the urine and milk of camels of charity as medecine. It means tha the urine of camels is pure because it is impermissible to take a medecine from impure object. As for sheeps , the Prophet ( peace be upon him) would perform prayer at sheepfolds before His mosquee was built , and he would command His companions to perform prayer in such folds though they ( the sheeps) surely had urinated in it. Same goes with cats . On the authority of Abu Qatadah , who reported that the Prophet ( peace be upon him) said : " It ( cat) is not impure , it is one of thoese domestic animal which go round you" Thus , considering cats pure is a way of relieving us ( Muslims) from strictness and difficulty Subhanallah! Some scholars maintain the same ruling on inedilible animals smaller than cats , such as birds. Therefore , the leftover of inedible animals other than cats or birds is impure. By this , we finished this important article. We may not pay attention to everything written here , but it is our duty as Muslims to not hasten in prayer and take care of the cleanliness and purity of our clothes and whatever surround us. ( floors...). May Allah accept our prayers and good deeds. Ameen !
